My name is Benny Hsu and I had been trying for so many years to find an online business where I could make money and actually love doing. Like many, I used to be in a job I hated and wanted out. So I went online to find a way. I tried so many ways that promised me lots of money with little work. Since I was so desperate, I fell for them. Although there were people making money that way, I struggled and gave up with I didn't see instant results. In October 2010, I decided to stop living a life that looked nice on the outside, but miserable on the inside.
I developed my first iPhone app that ended up being featured as App of the Week in August 2011. I imagined this would the online business that would allow me to finally quit. I struggled for 1.5 years trying to make other apps that would collectively allow me to quit.
It didn't happen.
In March 2014, I saw an interview about Teespring. I loved the idea of selling t-shirts without having to keep inventory. I wanted to try it out.
I thought it would be easy. I made my first shirt and ran Facebook ads. No one bought it. Surely my next one would be successful. It wasn't. I failed twenty-two campaigns in a row.
I kept trying because I was determined to have that first successful campaign. I wanted to experience that feeling. Finally I had the right design and right audience. I sold 13 shirts. After subtracting my ad spend, I made a profit of $30. It wasn't much, but I was happy!
I continued launching campaigns to find the right combination of passionate audience and selling them something they had to have. I failed a lot, but I also had some massive capaigns to made up for it in a big way.
15 months later, I reflect back on what I've been able to achieve. I'm able to run this business from anywhere in the world with just my laptop and wifi. My wife and I have traveled to Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and all over the United States. I even had a chance to visit and tour the Teespring office in San Francisco last December.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to design?
No, you do not need to be a graphic artists in order to sell t-shirts. You will just need to use websites like Elance or Upwork (formerly Odesk) to hire a graphic designer.
Is there a way to advertise my shirts for free?
Sure there are ways to do it, however, I don’t use it. The free ways to advertise can get you a handful of sales, but to get to the level where you’re making a lot more money, you’ll need to run paid advertising.
How much time do I need to put in?
That’s hard to say exactly, but I will say the amount of time you put in is what you’ll get out of it. So if you just put in a little time, then you’ll see little results. I know the ones who are successful doing this make this their main focus. Even if they have a full time or part time job already. They find the time. They put in a lot of hours and are always getting ideas and launching campaigns.
Is it too late to get started?
I don’t believe so at all. People will always love wearing t-shirts. They’re always looking for new ones. It’s up to you to create something that they gotta have.
Do I need a lot of money to get started?
It depends on what you consider a lot of money. You will need money to run Facebook ads, if you don’t already have an existing audience. You also need money to hire a designer. Cost could be anywhere form $5-$50 per design. Just remember what you pay is the type of quality you will get.
Is it really that easy to make money selling shirts?
Just like anything in life, success doesn’t come easy. It takes hard work, sacrifice, a willingness to fail, eagerness to learn, and not giving up. I’ve failed many times trying to make money online so I know it’s not easy. It took me 22 failed campaigns before I made a tiny profit. Even after I still failed a lot campaigns, but when I did have success with campaigns they were tremendously profitable.
